Frequently asked questions

How many elements are on the periodic table?

There are 118 confirmed elements, from hydrogen (1) to oganesson (118). Elements from 104 upwards have only been made a few atoms at a time, so many of their properties are predicted.

How is the periodic table arranged?

Elements are arranged in order of atomic number (the number of protons). Rows are called periods and match the number of electron shells; columns are called groups, and elements in the same group have the same number of outer electrons, so they react in similar ways.

What are the blocks of the periodic table?

The s-, p-, d- and f-blocks show which subshell the outermost electrons fill. Groups 1–2 are the s-block, groups 13–18 the p-block, the transition metals the d-block, and the lanthanides and actinides the f-block.
