Vector Addition: free math simulation
Type or drag vectors, see their components, and build the resultant tip to tail.
▶ Open the simulationFree, no sign-up. Works on phones, tablets and laptops.
The science
Vectors have size and direction. To add them, place them tip to tail: the resultant goes from the start of the first to the tip of the last. Breaking vectors into x and y components makes adding them easy.
R = √(Rx² + Ry²)
Things to try
- Type two perpendicular vectors, such as (3, 0) and (0, 4), and check Pythagoras.
- Make three vectors that add to zero.
- Read off the components of a vector at 30°.
Topics covered
components magnitude direction resultant
How to use it
Open the simulation, then change the experiment live with the sliders, checkboxes and buttons in the side panel. Drag objects on screen where it makes sense, and use Pause, Step, Speed and Reset in the bottom bar to study every moment.
