pH Scale: free chemistry simulation
Test everyday liquids, dilute them with water, and see how H₃O⁺ and OH⁻ change.

The science
pH measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Each step on the pH scale is a factor of ten in hydrogen-ion concentration, so pH 3 is ten times more acidic than pH 4. Diluting an acid with water moves its pH towards 7.
pH = −log₁₀[H₃O⁺]
Things to try
- Test several everyday liquids and put them in order from acidic to alkaline.
- Dilute an acid tenfold and watch the pH rise by about 1.
- Compare the H₃O⁺ and OH⁻ bars at pH 7.
Topics covered
acid base hydronium hydroxide dilution logarithm
How to use it
Open the simulation, then change the experiment live with the sliders, checkboxes and buttons in the side panel. Drag objects on screen where it makes sense, and use Pause, Step, Speed and Reset in the bottom bar to study every moment.
Frequently asked questions
What does the pH Scale simulation show?
pH measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Each step on the pH scale is a factor of ten in hydrogen-ion concentration, so pH 3 is ten times more acidic than pH 4. Diluting an acid with water moves its pH towards 7.
What is the key equation?
pH = −log₁₀[H₃O⁺]
Is the pH Scale simulation free?
Yes. It runs free in any web browser on phones, tablets and laptops, with no sign-up or download.
